Half Day at Rundale palace

jelgava.gif (89318 bytes)We drive southwards from Riga through Zemgale plain – the main "bread barn" of Latvia. On our way to Rundale we go through Bauska and see the ruins of Bauska Castle from the 15th century. The highlight of our journey is Rundale palace - the pearl of the 18th century baroque architecture built by famous Italian architect Rastrelli – also the designer of Winter Palace in St.Petersburg. Rundale palace was a present given by the Russian Czarina Anna Ivanovna to her favorite protege, Duke of Kurzeme. During the Soviet regime Rundale Palace was used as a boarding school, but now it is used for state receptions. You will enjoy a guided visit trough the imposing, well-restored palace of 138 rooms, approached through a grand drive flanked by twin semi-circular stables, find yourselves in Golden Hall and Ball Room, even look into the Duke's bedroom and have a walk in the park of French-style. After having the meal at the Palace restaurant we return to Riga.

Full Day in Cesis

Cesis is famous for its distinguished castle ruins of Livonian Order. Through numerous wars the castle was not destroyed because Livonian mint was located here. The old Hanseatic town is situated in the center of Vidzeme, surrounded by Gauja river National Park and is romantic with its picturesque landscape. The narrow streets of the former Hanseatic town have a charm of their own. We will walk through these cobble-stones covered streets and enjoy the beauty of this one of the oldest Latvian towns.

After good Latvian lunch we'll go to Araishi village. On Araishi lake the ruins of the unique castle from 9th century can be seen.

Half Day in Sigulda

wpe2.jpg (6352 bytes)There is something rather sedate about Sigulda: it is a pristine and airy little town, which hides its affluent past beneath a film of cleanliness. Sigulda is most attractive town in the Gauja National Park and is often called Latvian Switzerland because of the wonderful surrounding landscape. We visit the mighty Bishop’s Castle in Turaida and the mysterious Gutmana Cave linked to a romantic medieval love legend. On the other bank of Gauja river we will see the 13th century Knight’s Castles ruins and enjoy the beauty of the wonderful valley.

Behind the ruins of Knight’s Castle there is a "modern castle" built in 1878. Artists and writers of the National Awakening used to come here for inspiration, while we'll have lunch in this inspiring atmosphere. The tour ends in Riga.
